STREAM Tutoring

A few weeks ago I began teaching a monthly writing, reading, and art class for home schooled students at S.T.R.E.A.M. Tutoring in Warrenville, Illinois.  Designed for boys and girls ages 7-12-ish, the class has a social emotional learning component and is based on my guided journals, What’s Your Super Power?  and What Makes You So Awesome?  During each session we discuss topics related to empowerment and self-confidence, and the kids complete writing and art projects related to those themes.

Earlier this year I met Tammy Edwards, the founder and director of S.T.R.E.A.M. Tutoring. I quickly learned that she is passionate about teaching and enjoys helping others. She gave me a tour of her school. I was amazed by the learning environment she created. The multi-room facility is filled with books, educational games, science experiment materials, and musical instruments.

I was thrilled when Tammy asked me to take over her Thursday afternoon writing club! Here is my interview with Tammy.

What is S.T.R.E.A.M. Tutoring, Classes, & Parties?
It is a unique learning and party place with an emphasis on Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, and Math complete with a recreation area, science lab, art studio and a Dr. Seuss literacy and playroom for all ages and abilities!

Why did you decide to open S.T.R.E.A.M.?
I enjoy teaching all subjects and ages while motivating my students to enjoy hands-on learning! At S.T.R.E.A.M., I can create a variety of classes, specific to my students’ gifts and talents. I also enjoy tutoring privately and in small groups so students can catch up or work ahead, feeling confident and successful instead of frustration and despair. The arcade area is a great place where students can earn reward time and make friends!

What is your educational background?
I have a Bachelor’s in Science and a Master’s in Education from the University of Central Oklahoma and taught cadaver dissection at the university before teaching all subjects and grades at several private schools. I also was trained at Space Academy for Educators in 2006 and 2007.

What do you offer kids who are homeschooled?
We offer a school for students who are not able to be schooled at home, and may not be a good fit for private or public school. They can come to S.T.R.E.A.M. for all their subjects. We also offer specific academic and elective classes as well as socialization opportunities and clubs for homeschoolers. Some of the favorite classes are science lab, STEM, art, rocketry, robotics, astronomy, coding, cooking, dance, geography, history, and photography classes.

What feedback have you received from students and parents about Stacey Montgomery’s My Super Powers! Writing, Reading, and Art Club?
The students in Miss Stacey’s Club love creating, drawing, writing, journaling and sharing about important topics. They are excited to show off their work to their peers and family. Their parents are also excited about their child’s enthusiasm and improvement in writing and drawing! The students are learning how they are unique and how to use their abilities and talents to make a difference in the world. Mrs. Stacey’s instruction and influence will help her students to excel at expressing themselves through art, writing and sharing to become the best they can be! I’m blessed to have her teaching at S.T.R.E.A.M. and watching the growth week to week in my students’ skills and outlook!
