Life can often feel like it’s on autopilot. We wake up, go through the motions, and end the day feeling like it was just another routine cycle. While routine can provide stability and comfort, too much of it can leave us feeling uninspired and drained. Sometimes, what we need is a little shake-up—a way to add some spice and excitement to our everyday lives.
I’ve recently come to realize that life is too short to stick to the same old routine. It’s time to inject some fun, energy, and adventure into my days. Whether it’s trying something new, revisiting old hobbies, or stepping outside my comfort zone, I’m committed to finding new ways to keep life interesting. Here’s how I’m planning to make space for excitement and spice up my days!
1. Embrace the Unexpected
We all love a good plan, but sometimes, it’s the unplanned moments that bring the most joy. When I think back on some of my happiest memories, they often come from spontaneous decisions—an unplanned road trip, a last-minute invitation to dinner, or a random walk that led to discovering a hidden gem in the neighborhood.
It’s easy to get caught up in needing control and predictability, but life isn’t always meant to be perfectly planned. Embracing the unexpected means allowing ourselves to go with the flow and being open to new experiences. It’s about saying “yes” when opportunities arise, even if they seem outside the norm.
For me, this means letting go of the need for rigid schedules. It’s about accepting that sometimes things won’t go according to plan, but that doesn’t make them any less valuable—or enjoyable.
2. Step Outside Your Comfort Zone
We all have our comfort zones—the routines, habits, and activities that feel safe and familiar. But the comfort zone, while cozy, can also be limiting. Growth, adventure, and excitement happen outside of that zone.
One way I’m adding spice to my life is by intentionally stepping outside my comfort zone. Whether it’s trying a new hobby, going somewhere I’ve never been, or engaging in a challenging conversation, I’m actively looking for ways to stretch myself.
The key here is balance. It’s not about forcing myself into discomfort for the sake of it, but rather finding areas where I’ve held back due to fear or hesitation. By pushing those boundaries, I know I’ll uncover new opportunities and experiences that add excitement and fulfillment to my life.
3. Live with More Passion and Joy
Living passionately means fully engaging with life in a way that makes every moment feel meaningful. This doesn’t mean life has to be one big adrenaline rush, but it does mean approaching everyday activities with enthusiasm.
Whether it’s enjoying a meal, working on a project, or spending time with loved ones, I’m committing to being fully present in those moments. Instead of rushing through tasks or getting bogged down by stress, I want to find joy in the simple things.
This shift in mindset can make even the most mundane activities feel more exciting. It’s about appreciating the small details and seeing the beauty in everyday life. By living with more passion and joy, I’ll naturally add more spice to my days.
4. Say Yes to Spontaneous Plans
One of the best ways to break up routine is to be open to spontaneous plans. How often do we say “no” to invitations simply because they’re last-minute or don’t fit into our preconceived schedules? I know I’m guilty of this.
But spontaneity is a powerful way to inject excitement into life. Saying “yes” to spontaneous plans can lead to unexpected adventures and memories. Whether it’s a last-minute movie night, a weekend getaway, or simply going out for ice cream at midnight, these spontaneous moments often end up being the most fun.
In the past, I’ve been reluctant to veer away from my plans or make impromptu decisions. But moving forward, I’m going to say “yes” more often. Life is full of opportunities, and I don’t want to miss out on them because I’m too focused on sticking to my routines.
5. Revisit Interests I Love but Haven’t Explored Lately
Over time, we often let hobbies or passions that once brought us joy fall by the wayside. Whether it’s due to time constraints, changing priorities, or simply forgetting how much we enjoyed those activities, it’s easy to let go of things that once made us happy.
For me, one way I’m adding spice to life is by revisiting interests I’ve neglected. Whether it’s picking up a book on a topic I once loved, returning to a favorite hobby like painting, or reconnecting with an old friend, revisiting these interests helps reignite a sense of joy and excitement.
There’s something comforting about returning to familiar activities that once brought us happiness. It’s like reconnecting with a part of yourself that you’ve lost touch with. By revisiting these passions, I’m not only bringing more fun into my life but also reconnecting with the essence of who I am.
6. Try Something Completely New
In addition to revisiting old hobbies, trying something completely new can be an invigorating experience. Whether it’s a new hobby, activity, or even cuisine, new experiences open up our perspectives and make life feel fresh again.
For years I've been wanting to try goat yoga. I finally decided to go for it as part of my monthlong birthday celebration, but the timing did not work out. Within the next 30 days, I am determined to do it!! This is but one example of how I am committed to from time to time try new things- by myself, with Harold and Isaiah, and with friends. These new experiences will help me break away from routine and create exciting new memories.
7. Make Time for Adventure
Sometimes, adding spice to life requires a bit of intentional planning. While spontaneity is great, there’s also value in making time for adventure. Whether it’s planning a weekend getaway, signing up for a new course, or scheduling time for creative projects, making time for adventure ensures that life doesn’t become monotonous.
For me, this means prioritizing activities that excite me. Instead of letting work and responsibilities take over, I’m making space for the things that make life feel adventurous and thrilling.
As recent empty nesters, my husband, Harold, and I have already put into action plans for adventures. We are focusing on our love for travel, art, history, and food!
Conclusion: Finding the Spark That Makes Each Moment Brighter
Ultimately, adding spice to life is about finding balance. Routines are necessary, but they shouldn’t define us. By embracing the unexpected, stepping outside our comfort zones, living with more passion, saying yes to spontaneous plans, and revisiting old interests, we can keep life exciting and fresh.
Each day presents an opportunity to add a little spark—a little spice—to our lives. It’s up to us to seize those opportunities, to be open to new experiences, and to remind ourselves that life is meant to be lived fully. Today, I’m reminding myself to find the spark that makes each moment brighter. What will you do to spice up your life?
