Election Day will undoubtedly be stressful for many of us. The constant news updates, social media debates, and high stakes can make it difficult to feel calm. It’s perfectly normal to feel concerned and anxious about the election. However, it’s equally important to have strategies in place to manage that stress. Here are seven ways to cultivate personal peace on Election Day and beyond.

1. Limit News Consumption

While it’s important to stay informed, the flood of news on election day can heighten anxiety. Instead of constantly refreshing news feeds or having election coverage on all day and night, consider checking in every couple of hours to stay aware of major developments without getting overwhelmed.

Tip: Consider disabling push notifications from news apps for the day.

2. Set Boundaries with Conversations

Having conversations with people you care about can be reassuring, especially on Election Day. However, if political discussions feel too tense, consider setting boundaries. If you’re surrounded by people who want to discuss politics, it’s okay to let them know that you’d rather not engage in political conversations today, or politely excuse yourself if the topic becomes overwhelming. Remember, protecting your mental well-being is important, and it’s okay to prioritize peace over debate.

Tip: You might say something like, “I’m focusing on staying calm today, so let’s talk about this another time.”

3. Spend Time in Nature

Studies have shown that spending time outdoors can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and improve mood. Start off the day with a walk in the park, enjoy a bike ride, or sit quietly in your backyard. Engaging with nature can help you regain a sense of peace and remind you that life continues even amidst election stress. It is my practice to walk almost each morning. I find it calming, setting the tone for the day.

Tip: Bring a journal with you to jot down your thoughts or reflections while you’re in nature. This practice not only enhances your mindfulness but also allows you to process your emotions and thoughts about the day in a constructive way.

4. Focus on Personal Gratitude

Take time to reflect on the positives in your life. Write down three things you’re grateful for, big or small. Gratitude helps shift your focus from stress and worry to appreciation, creating a more balanced perspective. This simple exercise can increase feelings of optimism and contentment, helping you feel more resilient as you navigate a potentially challenging day.

Tip: Keep a small gratitude journal handy to note things that make you smile throughout the day.

5. Unplug from Social Media

Social media can be a significant source of stress on Election Day, with opinions, updates, and debates constantly filling your feed. Give yourself permission to unplug, even if only for a few hours. Taking a social media break can reduce anxiety, keep you from becoming overwhelmed, and help you stay focused on the things within your control.

Tip: Actively clean your social media of voices that are inflammatory, combative, or any way triggering. I've been cleaning my social media of problematic political voices since 2012. It's a beautiful thing!

6. Engage in a Creative Activity

Immersing yourself in a creative activity can help you disconnect from election stress and focus elsewhere. Whether it’s baking, drawing, knitting, or cooking, creativity can be an excellent outlet for anxious energy. Even just 30 minutes of doing something creative can leave you feeling more relaxed and fulfilled.

7. Practice Mindfulness or Meditation

Mindfulness and meditation can be powerful tools to help you stay centered and calm. These practices encourage you to observe your thoughts without judgment, which can reduce stress and increase inner peace. Even a five-minute meditation session can help you feel more grounded and prepared to handle the day’s events.

Tip: Try using a meditation app or a guided meditation video to get started, especially if you’re new to meditation.

Also, one of the most powerful ways to help maintain personal peace is to vote you conscience. Regardless of the outcome of the election, I know that I did my part. That alone will give me a measure of personal peace.
