The My Super Powers! Social Emotional Learning Program offers 2 options for 4th and 5th grade. Option One is based on the guided journal, Why Is Different Awesome? With an emphasis on social awareness, the lessons in this program are designed to help students understand differences, embrace their own differences, and accept differences in others.
One challenge faced by schools is that some students feel left out. They do not feel as if they are part of the school community. This can result from perceived or actual differences based on ethnicity, nationality, religion, race, or socio-economic status. It can also result from not understanding what it means to have a physical or intellectual difference or how to include students with such differences.
Students who do not feel accepted are less likely to fully engage in either the academic or social facets of school, and tend to have a higher rate of absenteeism and discipline problems.
The Why Is Different Awesome? program is an 8-10 week program, with weekly lessons that can be incorporated once a week into a school’s existing 45-60 minute writing unit. Click here to download a sample lesson.
